AceShowbiz - The speculation over Christopher Nolan's next movie has come to an end. Universal revealed Monday, December 23 that Nolan will adapt "The Odyssey", the epic poem from Homer that follows Odysseus' journey home after the Trojan war.
"Christopher Nolan's next film ‘The Odyssey' is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology," said the studio. "The film brings Homer's foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026."
Nolan's latest endeavor promises to be a cinematic spectacle, featuring an all-star cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya Coleman, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Anne Hathaway, and Charlize Theron.
With such a lineup, audiences can expect top-notch performances that do justice to the epic tale. Holland, in particular, has expressed his excitement, "To be perfectly honest, I don't really know what it's about. I'm super excited, but it's been pretty quiet about the project. I met with [Nolan] and it was awesome. He kind of loosely pitched what it is, and I'm sure when he's ready he'll announce what it's about."
Nolan's adaptation will explore the rich narrative of "The Odyssey," chronicling the treacherous journey of Odysseus as he attempts to return home after the Trojan War.
This story delves into themes of heroism, loyalty, cunning, and the struggle against divine will. Iconic episodes such as Odysseus' encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the witch-goddess Circe are expected to be brought to life with Nolan's signature attention to detail and grandiose storytelling style.
While "The Odyssey" has seen various adaptations over the years, including a 1954 Italian film starring Kirk Douglas and the 1997 miniseries with Armand Assante, Nolan's take is particularly anticipated due to his track record of delivering critically acclaimed and visually stunning films.
This adaptation is set to start shooting in early 2025, with a projected release date of July 17, 2026, a timeframe often chosen by Nolan for his works.
The film marks Nolan's second project with Universal, following the immense success of "Oppenheimer." That film not only earned Nolan prestigious Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, but also solidified his status as a filmmaker who can blend historical accuracy with compelling narrative threads. Nolan is set to write and produce "The Odyssey" alongside Emma Thomas under their Syncopy banner.
With this new venture, Nolan is stepping into a new territory of mythology and ancient epic tales, showing his versatility as a filmmaker. Fans eagerly await the release, confident that Nolan will bring the epic saga of Odysseus to life in a way never seen before.
