AceShowbiz - Filmmaker James Gunn has taken a distinct approach in crafting his upcoming Superman film, choosing to drop the previously announced "Superman: Legacy" title in favor of the more straightforward "Superman."

According to Gunn, this decision reflects his desire for the film to set a stage for the future of the Superman franchise. "One of the things was, I thought maybe the title ... had a looking back feeling about it, and this isn't about looking back, this is about looking forward," Gunn explained during a set visit with ComicBook.

Gunn's revelation came during a "pre-mortem" session, a unique process where all department heads discuss potential pitfalls for the film before shooting begins.

"We go into a room with me and all the department heads and we say, 'Let's say this movie is a colossal f-ck-up. We find out two years from now when this movie comes out, it goes terribly wrong. What are we doing right now that we're not talking about, that we're doing this, making this movie wrong?' " he shared. This method allows everyone involved to voice concerns, whether about the script, casting, or inter-departmental communication.

While the title "Superman: Legacy" might suggest a backward glance, Gunn wants the film's narrative to be forward-thinking. Yet, he assured fans that concepts of legacy will still be explored. "When you see the movie, you'll understand where 'Legacy' comes from because it is, again, it's about Clark and his relationship to the script … and whose legacy is he, really?" Gunn clarified.

Beyond title changes, Gunn is embracing Superman's classic comic book look, including the character's iconic red trunks, which have been a topic of much debate. "He dresses like a professional wrestler... that shows that [he wants kids to not be afraid of him]," Gunn explained, highlighting how the costume balances Superman's immense power with a sense of approachability and hope.

Actor David Corenswet, who plays Superman, was instrumental in this decision. "He's an alien... and he wants people to like him," Gunn said, describing the actor's perspective.

The decision to include the red trunks marks a significant departure from the darker aesthetic of the DCEU, aligning with Gunn's vision for a brighter, more hopeful DC Universe. Gunn's Superman aims to be a refreshing, colorful beacon of positivity, ready to inspire a new generation of fans.

"Superman" is scheduled to soar into theaters on July 11, 2025, promising to usher in a new era for the Man of Steel.
