The speculation reached a fever pitch when Gellar, 47, gave a curt response when questioned about Hewitt's return in the upcoming "I Know What You Did Last Summer" sequel.
When asked if Hewitt, 45, would be reprising her role, Gellar replied, "I have nothing to do with that," before walking away from the interviewer. The interaction quickly went viral, leading fans to wonder if the co-stars were at odds.
Gellar took to her Instagram Story to clarify the situation, writing, "Aspiring actors please note: This 'deer in the headlights' reaction is perfect for when you are excited to see so many old friends in one project but have already stupidly forgotten what NDA means once this month."
Jennifer Love Hewitt, who confirmed her return to the franchise as Julie James on Instagram, also addressed the rumors on Tommy DiDario's podcast, "I've Never Said This Before."
Hewitt remarked, "I just heard that there's this whole thing where they think that Sarah and I were fighting or something. There's all these things out there." She further elaborated, "I root for her and Freddie and think it's the cutest thing in the world that they've been married for 100 years and have kids. It's adorable." Hewitt assured listeners that the cast got along well during their time on the original film.
Both actresses were prominent figures in the original 1997 slasher hit, sharing the screen with Freddie Prinze Jr., Ryan Phillippe, and the late Anne Heche. Gellar and Prinze Jr. met on the set of the film and were married five years later. They now have two children.
Though Gellar will not be part of the new sequel, fans are thrilled about Hewitt and Prinze Jr. returning alongside a fresh cast including Madelyn Cline and Chase Sui Wonders. The new "I Know What You Did Last Summer" film is set to release on July 18, 2025.
