AceShowbiz - Jane Seymour, the former James Bond girl, had a close brush with disaster when the recent Californian wildfires, named the Franklin Fire, came within inches of her Malibu home. The 73-year-old actress explained in a heartfelt recount how she narrowly escaped with just the clothes on her back.
"I just literally had jeans and a sweater, which I've been wearing for four days and sleeping at different people's houses," she said during the British American Business Council (BABC) annual Christmas luncheon.
The emergency evacuations began late on Monday night when Seymour's partner, John Zambetti's son, Johnny, saw the horrifying flames from his location in Serra Retreat. "He saw a glow behind the curtains, opened the windows, saw 10-foot flames, and called us immediately and said 'Get out. Get out.' We all got out just in time because of that," recalled Seymour.
Returning to a home that smelled heavily of smoke on Thursday, Seymour couldn't help but commend the firefighters' "astounding" efforts. "The fire department were unbelievable and the fire came up to inches of the property and they have saved so many lives and I am eternally grateful and shaken," she said.
The intense wildfires had burned more than 4,000 acres, destroying 14 buildings and damaging another 13, but Seymour's home was thankfully spared from this fate.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Seymour opened up about the critical moment she decided which mementos to save. "Honestly, I ran out of the house with the clothes I was wearing, which is jeans. And I think I threw an extra sweater on. And I took a couple of books that my mother had saved from the war in a concentration camp. So, of everything I own in the world, that is what I decided to take with me," she shared.
The Franklin Fire, starting near Pepperdine University on Monday night, rapidly expanded, affecting numerous celebrities including Dick Van Dyke, who turned 99 during the chaos, and pop superstar Cher. The frail Van Dyke described how he exhausted himself while trying to combat the flames, ultimately needing neighbors' assistance to evacuate safely.
Praising the valiant efforts of the firefighting teams, Seymour showed deep appreciation for their work. Posting on Instagram, she wrote, "We are deeply grateful for the amazing firefighters and the incredible band of Malibu volunteer firefighters who are risking everything to protect our homes and our community." She urged her followers to find strength and unity amidst adversity.
Seymour, despite the terrifying experience, attended the BABC's Holiday Drive for Children's Hospital Los Angeles, where she received the LA Icon Award. At the event, she reiterated her gratitude, "This is a huge honor, and after the week that we've had with the fires coming right up to my house, I couldn't even conceive of putting clothes on, let alone being able to come and talk to anyone about anything."
As wildfires become more frequent, such harrowing tales remind us of the bravery displayed by both those on the front lines and the resilience of the communities affected.
