AceShowbiz - Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for "28 Years Later," the third installment in the "28 Days Later" franchise. The post-apocalyptic horror film picks up nearly three decades after the viral outbreak that devastated society.
The trailer chronicles the survivors' fight to exist amidst the ongoing threat of the "rage virus." One group lives on a protected island connected to the mainland by a fortified causeway. When a member of the group ventures into the mainland, they uncover a multitude of secrets.
The cast includes Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes. Cillian Murphy, the protagonist of the original 2002 film, does not appear on the official cast list. However, online speculation has been rife since the release of the trailer due to a brief shot of a zombie resembling Murphy.
Although the trailer does not reveal the plot in detail, it sets an ominous and suspenseful tone, hinting at the dangers and mutations that have evolved in the wake of the virus. The trailer also features a chilling rendition of Rudyard Kipling's war poem "Boots."
Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman did tease Murphy's involvement in the film, stating that he will appear "in a surprising way and in a way that grows." Murphy previously hinted at his return in an interview with Deadline, saying, "I'm going to do it in a surprising way. I think Danny's got a couple more films up his sleeve after this one. I'm very excited about it."
Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, the original creative team behind "28 Days Later," "28 Years Later" is set to launch a new trilogy. A sequel, "28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple," is already in production under the direction of Nia DaCosta.
"28 Years Later" is scheduled to hit theaters on June 20, 2025.
