AceShowbiz - Olivia Munn and John Mulaney have opened up about their life together, shedding light on a journey characterized by love, addiction recovery, and new parenthood. The couple shares two children - Malcolm, 2, and Méi June, 2 months - and they have candidly discussed John's struggles with addiction and the steps they have taken to keep him on track.
In a recent GQ interview, Olivia recounted the early days of her relationship with John, revealing that she became pregnant with Malcolm in 2021, shortly after John concluded his second stay in rehab. "I was watching someone newly sober, at the edge of a cliff," Olivia shared, expressing her initial uncertainties in helping someone she was still getting to know.
John, a "Saturday Night Live" alum who was named GQ's 2024 Man of the Year, spoke about relying on medications such as Klonopin and Xanax, highlighting a particularly "insane" night that underscored the depths of his addiction. "I thought, 'Okay… I'm going to totally slow down. That was like a Tuesday. And Thursday night, I did it again,' " he recounted.
In a bid to prevent him from relapsing, Olivia took a proactive role in John's recovery journey. At six months pregnant, she staged a mini-intervention, deciding to administer random drug tests to ensure John remained committed to his sobriety.
"It's like a relief… I like to be able to not even have that be a question in her or anyone else's mind," John said, welcoming his partner's effort to keep him sober. "Something about peeing in that cup is like, I'm walking this walk. It gives me confidence."
The couple has since married and settled into life as a family of four in California. Reflecting on the impact of living on the West Coast, John humorously noted changes in their son Malcolm's hair texture with the different climates.
Olivia also confronted her own challenges, revealing her breast cancer diagnosis before their daughter, Méi June, was born via surrogate. She shared how John's unwavering support made navigating her illness bearable, illustrating the depth of their partnership. "It would've felt like climbing an iceberg without him," she said.
Despite these hardships, the duo has shown remarkable resilience, underscoring the strength of their relationship. Their story serves as an inspiring testament to the power of love, accountability, and mutual support, resonating with many young people who admire their journey and the courage it took to share it openly.
