AceShowbiz - In an unexpected yet thrilling twist, pop star Charli XCX is set to take her talents from the music stage to the big screen with her acting debut in the Pete Ohs-directed movie "Erupcja". The film, which was discreetly filmed in Warsaw, Poland, over the summer, also stars Jeremy O. Harris and Lena Gora. "Erupcja", meaning eruption in Polish, captures the volatile dynamics between an American woman named Bethany, played by Charli, and her Polish friend, portrayed by Gora.
"The way [Ohs] talked about making his films felt akin to making an album and the chance meeting also felt equivalent to the conversational and spontaneous nature of his filmmaking," Charli XCX shared about her decision to join the film. Her connection with Ohs and Harris happened serendipitously at a New York bar, leading to a creative collaboration that neither anticipated.
Ohs' unique filmmaking process involves developing characters and plotlines on the fly, inspired by the locations they shoot in. He explained, "We shoot in order, and we write the scenes as we go. We'll write the dialogue the day before or the morning of, and we live the story." The dynamic and pressure-free environment allowed Charli to bring Bethany to life in a way that deviated significantly from her pop star persona. "Charli was like, 'I think it should be completely not me. I feel like I could play super shy,' " Ohs added, suggesting how Bethany would contrast with Charli's public image.
Charli's immersion into acting has been met with enthusiasm from her directors and co-stars. "Charli is an excellent actress," praised Ohs. "She is a performer. She understands what it's like to have a camera pointed at her. She understands how to convey things through all the different ways in which we communicate, whether it's with body language or your voice or your facial expressions. She had a scene where she cried, without being asked - she could deliver all the goods."
Despite attempts to keep "Erupcja" under wraps, filming in a public setting made it difficult to maintain secrecy. "She took selfies with many a Polish fan," Ohs remarked, explaining how word quickly spread about the project. A nightclub scene proved particularly challenging to shoot due to the crowd mistaking Charli's presence for a secret performance.
As "Erupcja" prepares to debut, Charli's fans eagerly anticipate not only this film but also her future projects including "Faces of Death", "I Want Your Sex" and "100 Nights of Hero". Her transition from pop star to actor is promising to be as captivating and unique as her music career.
