AceShowbiz - In the wake of Sierra McClain's departure from "9-1-1: Lone Star", showrunner Rashad Raisani has defended Grace Ryder's season 5 storyline. Raisani explained the matter in a new interview.
According to the showrunner, they deemed killing Grace off the series as inappropriate, considering her character. Instead, they decided to explore a compelling reason that would justify her leaving her family and job: a divine calling.
According to Raisani, Grace's encounter with a presentation by Mercy Ships, a real-life organization providing global surgeries, ignited a fire within her. The show wanted to protect Grace's character while acknowledging that her decision may not resonate with everyone.
"People are allowed to feel the feelings they have about it," Raisani remarked, "but we did all we could do to protect her character."
Despite the mixed reactions, Raisani is optimistic about the opportunity created by McClain's departure. Judd Ryder's storyline has become more complex and nuanced, with new layers of isolation, frustration, and unspoken emotions emerging.
Regarding Wyatt Harris, Raisani revealed that the plan to make him an apprentice to Grace in the call center was accelerated due to McClain's exit. While Wyatt has been well-trained, viewers can expect to see him face pressure throughout the season.
