AceShowbiz - The director of three of the four highest-grossing movies of all time, James Cameron, recently addressed critics who target the dialogue in his films. Speaking with Empire Magazine, Cameron - whose legendary directing career includes works like "Avatar," "Avatar: The Way of Water," and "Titanic" - took the opportunity to confront these critiques head-on.
When asked about comments that deem his scripts "cringeworthy," Cameron candidly admitted, "I don't think of it as some Holy Grail, that's for sure. I look at it now and there are parts of it that are pretty cringeworthy, and parts of it that are like, 'Yeah, we did pretty well for the resources we had available.' "
In an apparent challenge to his critics, he added, "You know what? Let me see your three-out-of-the-four-highest-grossing films - then we'll talk about dialogue effectiveness."
Cameron's films have not only seen unprecedented financial success but have left an indelible mark on the cinematic landscape. "Avatar" holds the title for the highest-grossing movie globally with $2.9 billion in earnings, while its sequel, "Avatar: The Way of Water," stands as the third-highest grossing with $2.3 billion. "Titanic" holds the fourth position, generating $2.2 billion. Despite the occasional backlash on the scripts, these numbers reinforce Cameron's point about the overall effectiveness of his storytelling.
Nevertheless, Cameron accepts that not everyone perceives his dialogue with the same leniency, saying, "I don't cringe on any of the dialogue, but I have a lower cringe factor than, apparently, a lot of people do around the dialogue that I write." But he's quick to highlight that the impact of his films extends far beyond the reach of a few questionable lines.
The acclaimed director, who has won three Academy Award - all for "Titanic" -continues to demonstrate his resilience against criticism. Earlier remarks from Cameron also addressed complaints over the length of "Avatar: The Way of Water," dismissing detractors who binge-watch TV shows for hours but complain about a three-hour movie.
Cameron's third installment in the Avatar saga, "Avatar: Fire and Ash," is set to hit theaters on December 19, 2025. As cinema-goers eagerly await its release, it's clear that Cameron's storytelling prowess remains unchallenged, regardless of the critique it may attract.
