AceShowbiz - Patti Scialfa, musician and wife of Bruce Springsteen, has opened up about her six-year journey with multiple myeloma, explaining how it has affected her participation in the E Street Band's current tour.
In the new documentary "Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band", which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, Scialfa, 71, revealed that she was diagnosed with early stage multiple myeloma in 2018 while performing on Broadway with Springsteen. The cancer impacts her immune system, requiring her to be cautious about her activities and exposure.
Scialfa explained that this is why her presence on the 2023-2024 tour with Springsteen and the band has been limited. She joins them when possible, usually performing only a few songs, to protect her health.
Previously, Scialfa had stated that she was stepping back from the tour to focus on her solo album and spend time with her and Springsteen's first grandchild.
"Road Diary" marks the first time Scialfa has publicly addressed her multiple myeloma diagnosis. The cancer affects plasma cells in the bone marrow, which are an important part of the immune system.
Scialfa has been a member of the E Street Band since 1984, playing a significant role in almost every major Springsteen tour.
Springsteen himself has also faced health issues during the tour, postponing dates in 2023 due to peptic ulcer disease and canceling additional dates in Europe due to vocal problems.
"Road Diary", directed by Thom Zimny, provides fans with an intimate glimpse into the inner workings of the E Street Band, featuring interviews with more than a dozen members. The documentary will hit Hulu and Disney+ on October 25.
