AceShowbiz - Joey Lawrence broke his silence regarding allegations that he had an extramarital affair with his "Socked in for Christmas" co-star Melina Alves. Taking to Instagram, Lawrence, 48, strongly denied the cheating claims, portraying his relationship with Alves as purely platonic. Both Lawrence and Alves, 40, emphasized that their bond was rooted in mutual understanding and shared personal challenges.
"Melina and I became close friends and I did not have a physical relationship with her," Lawrence wrote, refuting the rumors. Alves echoed this sentiment on her own social media, attributing their friendship to the troubles they were facing in their respective marriages.
According to Lawrence, the real culprit behind his failed marriage to Cope was her alleged inability to accept his two teenage daughters from his previous marriage to Chandie Yawn-Nelson.
"The unraveling of my marriage was tied to my realization that there was no way my two eldest daughters were ever going to be accepted by my wife to be part of my family," Lawrence explained in a heartfelt post. Charleston, 18, and Liberty, 14, he said, are his top priority, and he could not compromise on their well-being.
Lawrence and Cope, who share a one-year-old daughter named Dylan, announced their split less than a year after their wedding. Cope has requested sole physical custody of Dylan, which Lawrence has yet to publicly address directly. He did, however, acknowledge the challenging nature of their separation, describing it as a "difficult time."
The divorce news took a dramatic turn when Alves' estranged husband, Edward Rider, accused Alves and Lawrence of having an affair. Alves, in response, stated she and Rider had been living apart since January 2023, and denounced Rider for dragging Lawrence into their marital issues.
Throughout these revelations, Lawrence remained focused on conveying that his children's well-being was of the utmost importance. "I cannot and will not compromise on the love and care that my daughters deserve," he reaffirmed.
As debates over these claims continue, Lawrence and Cope are moving forward with their divorce proceedings, each maneuvering through this highly scrutinized chapter of their lives while prioritizing their differing definitions of family and personal happiness.
