AceShowbiz - Prepare yourself for the ultimate slitherfest as the cult classic "Anaconda" makes its way back to the big screen with a fresh, comedic twist. Columbia Pictures is in early talks with Jack Black and Paul Rudd to headline a re-imagining of the 1997 film that captivated audiences with its thrilling and campy horror.
The new "Anaconda" project will be directed by Tom Gormican, known for his work on the Nicolas Cage meta-comedy "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent". Gormican will also co-write the script alongside Kevin Etten, suggesting a blend of horror and humor that Gormican has successfully managed in his past work.
The original "Anaconda", directed by Luis Llosa, followed a National Geographic film crew as they ventured into the Amazon rainforest to document the world's largest and deadliest snake. However, the crew soon found themselves becoming the prey as a giant anaconda with a particular appetite for humans stalked them.
The 1997 film featured a star-studded cast including Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, Ice Cube and Jon Voight. It grossed $136 million globally, solidifying its place as a cult classic. The original Anaconda spawned several sequels, ranging from theatrical releases to direct-to-TV movies.
The upcoming "Anaconda" re-imagining will take a different narrative approach. Instead of focusing on a documentary crew, the story will center on a group of friends grappling with mid-life crises. These characters, seeking to recapture their youthful spirit, decide to remake their favorite movie from the 90s by venturing into the rainforest. However, their adventure takes a sinister turn when they encounter natural disasters, giant snakes and violent criminals.
Sources reveal that Jack Black and Paul Rudd are in talks to portray characters who are a director stuck in a dead-end job and an actor who has lost sight of his Hollywood dreams, respectively.
The "Anaconda" re-imagining has been in the works since early 2023, with a focus on finding the right balance of horror and comedy. The combination of Gormican's previous work and the comedic talents of Black and Rudd promises a thrilling and hilarious adventure that will captivate audiences of all generations.
