AceShowbiz - Anne Hathaway took to Instagram on August 7th to celebrate the 20th anniversary of "Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement". She reminisced on the film and its soundtrack, particularly Kelly Clarkson's hit song "Breakaway".
Hathaway shared behind-the-scenes photos from the sequel, including moments with co-stars Chris Pine, Julie Andrews, and director Garry Marshall. In the post, she expressed her desire to make a third "Princess Diaries" film.
"There is a script for the third movie," Hathaway revealed in a previous interview. "I'll pull for it, and if you guys pull for it, it will happen."
Pine and Robert Schwartzman, who played Mia Thermopolis' love interests in the first and second films respectively, have also expressed interest in reprising their roles.
However, Julie Andrews has been hesitant about a third installment, saying, "Sometimes it's best to leave a good thing alone." She added, "I'd be very happy if we did another one, but I don't expect to."
Despite Andrews' reservations, fans have been clamoring for a sequel for years. Comments on Hathaway's post were flooded with requests for a Princess Diaries 3.
In November 2022, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Disney was in the works on a third "Princess Diaries" movie. Hathaway has previously expressed her willingness to make it happen, suggesting they would "go to where Julie Andrews was and put a green screen behind her."
The original "Princess Diaries" (2001) and its sequel (2004) were directed by Garry Marshall and starred Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, a high school student who discovers she is the princess of Genovia. The films have become cult classics and remain beloved by fans around the world.
