AceShowbiz - Artists Equity, the production company co-founded by Hollywood heavyweights Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, has reportedly acquired the rights to a screenplay penned by Charles Randolph. The script adapts Ryan Holiday's riveting nonfiction book, "Conspiracy: Peter Thiel, Hulk Hogan, Gawker and the Anatomy of Intrigue." This book delves deep into the notorious legal battle that led to the colossal downfall of Gawker Media.
The film, currently titled "Killing Gawker," will explore the monumental 2016 court case where professional wrestler Hulk Hogan emerged victorious with a jaw-dropping $140 million judgement against Gawker. This followed after Gawker posted a sensational and invasive sex tape clip featuring Hogan and Heather Clem, which triggered Hogan's legal response.
Despite Gawker's founder, Nick Denton, citing the First Amendment to justify keeping the clip up, a judge ordered its removal and the case accelerated to a high-stakes legal battle funded by Silicon Valley mogul Peter Thiel, who had his personal motives against Gawker.
If finalized, the project will see Gus Van Sant taking the director's chair, reuniting him with Damon and Affleck, whose careers were significantly boosted after Van Sant directed them in the critically acclaimed "Good Will Hunting." Although neither Damon nor Affleck is confirmed to star, rumors hint that Affleck might take on the role of Hulk Hogan.
While Gawker ultimately shuttered operations, many of its other sites continued to function. The brand briefly revived in 2021 under the Bustle Digital Group, only to close again in early 2023. This high-profile fiasco, blending themes of privacy, media ethics, and personal vengeance, makes for a compelling cinematic endeavor.
