When asked whether she ever gets tired of hearing her own chart-topping singles, Cabello admitted, "More for 'Senorita' than 'Havana' to be honest." "I think there's always a worry when a song becomes so massive that it's going to be bigger than you," she shared. "I obviously love that they were so massive and successful. But it does get people attached to you in a certain light."
For Cabello, that light was intensely focused on her public relationship with Shawn Mendes, which started in July 2019 shortly after "Senorita" dropped and ended two years later in November 2021.
During their relationship, the couple became one of pop culture's most talked-about pairs, frequently making headlines and public appearances - like their first joint VMAs appearance in August 2019 where they won Best Collaboration. But the intense scrutiny had its drawbacks. "I was in a really public relationship and as a woman, you're like, 'I don't want this couple thing to be my new identity.' "
Even after their split, fleeting moments of rekindling, including a Coachella sighting in April 2023, quickly fizzled out. "It was a fun moment," Cabello shared on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast. "I think you're just kind of like, 'Yeah, this doesn't really … it's not a fit - it doesn't feel right.' " Both decided it wasn't worth forcing something that didn't feel genuine, opting instead to move on.
Cabello faces additional challenges as she rolls out new music. She finds it "really frustrating" that some fans question the authenticity of her latest work simply because it deviates from her previous sound.
"It's so ironic," she told Complex. "I feel like the inauthentic thing to do would be to give the public what you know is gonna work for you, or what they're already expecting from you. That's the easy way." With her new album, "C, XOXO", Cabello aims to experiment and evolve, taking artistic risks in the name of growth.
