AceShowbiz - Ariana Grande's remix of "The Boy Is Mine" has done more than just reimagine a beloved classic. It has also helped heal wounds and bridge gaps between the original singers, Monica and Brandy.
Monica, who was initially hesitant about altering the song, was immediately captivated by Grande's version with producer Max Martin. She credits Grande's humility and authenticity for convincing her to participate. "Everything has been directly from her chest," Monica said. "For me, authenticity, humility, all of those things are key."
Grande's enthusiasm extended beyond the recording studio. She included both Monica and Brandy in the music video, which features a cameo from Penn Badgley as a fictional mayor. Monica believes Grande's involvement helped mend her relationship with Brandy, which had been rumored to be strained.
"The process of the new collaboration did a lot of closing the gaps," Monica said. "When you properly communicate, you can find not only resolutions to problems but sometimes you find that there weren't ever problems, just consistent miscommunications."
Monica and Brandy have since grown closer, talking more recently than they have in decades. Both singers credit Grande for reuniting them and reigniting their collective fandom.
Monica is grateful for Grande's role in their reconciliation. "We recognized that the key was to keep other people out of our relationship and let it be between she and I," she said. "It's changed the trajectory of it in its totality."
The remix has also been met with excitement from Monica's children. "My 19-year-old, Rocko, was like, 'That's hard,' " she said.
Monica and Brandy are open to future collaborations, saying they are "very much on board" for another project together. "It's team 'The Boy Is Mine' today, tomorrow, and for the last 25 years," Monica said.
