AceShowbiz - Renee Rapp, the 24-year-old pop star and actress, recently opened up about her sexuality in an interview with "Them" on June 6. Publicly identifying as bisexual for most of her life, Rapp revealed that she had been considering coming out as a lesbian for a while. However, she was hesitant due to several negative past experiences that left her hurt and uncertain.
Her January appearance on "Saturday Night Live" (SNL) became the defining moment for this significant change. Initially, a line in her sketch was written to introduce her as a "bisexual intern." However, Rapp approached SNL staff writer and nonbinary comedian Celeste Yim to modify the descriptor to "gay." Rapp explained, "They were so sweet, and obviously, they were going to be so sweet. But to me, I was thinking about being so afraid to publicly change my identity. I didn't want anybody to be upset with me."
Initially reluctant to make the change fearing backlash from both bisexual and lesbian communities, Rapp found herself in a dilemma. "I didn't want to do it and be like, 'Oh my God, I'm not using the word 'bisexual,' and make bisexual people feel s****y. I also didn't want to be like, 'OK, I'm 'gay' and have all the lesbians be like, 'Say you're bisexual, then.' I felt so wrapped up and scared," she shared.
With encouragement from a close friend who said, "I think it would be really f**king sick if you came out as a lesbian on SNL," Rapp bravely decided to go through with the change. Despite her nervousness, she stayed off her phone for a few days post-episode and ultimately felt relieved and proud of her decision.
