Halle Bailey 'Trying Not to Drown' in 'Severe' Postpartum Depression

The 'Little Mermaid' actress shares her struggles with severe postpartum depression after giving birth to her son and emphasizes the need for awareness and support for new mothers.

AceShowbiz - In a heartfelt disclosure, Halle Bailey has candidly opened up about her battle with severe postpartum depression following the birth of her son, Halo. Bailey, at the age of 24, has shared her tumultuous journey through a Snapchat video, aiming to bring awareness to the struggles new mothers face, especially under the scrutinizing eye of the public and social media.

"Halo is a miracle. He's perfect. He's beautiful. But the only thing that's been hard for me is feeling normal in my own body. I feel like a completely different person when I look in the mirror," she said of her baby.

Despite the bliss of welcoming her first child with boyfriend DDG in December 2023, Bailey's introduction to motherhood has been marred by "severe, severe postpartum depression." "It's to the point where it's really bad," she admitted. "It's hard for me to be separated from my baby for more than 30 minutes at a time before I start to kind of freak out."

The young actress, who garnered attention for her role in "The Little Mermaid", described feeling like she was "drowning" in an ocean of overwhelming emotions, struggling to find moments of air amidst the waves of depression. "You're trying not to drown," she said.

Bailey "didn't realize how serious of a thing it actually was." Fortunately, she experienced moments of respite. "There are moments where you come up for air, and they feel like the most beautiful things," she said.

She's also grateful for having a strong support system during such vulnerable times, and commends DDG, whom Bailey warmly refers to as "Moo Moo", for being an "amazing daddy."

The couple's conscious decision to keep their pregnancy journey private until after Halo's birth was influenced by the negative attention and unwarranted opinions often directed at public figures. Bailey's decision to keep her pregnancy away from the public eye was a protective measure, not only for her peace but for her family's well-being, too.

The persistent hurtful comments she saw online about her family also prompted her to share her struggles. She urged people to be more considerate, especially to those who may seem to have it all together. "Even though you may look up to certain people and you think that they're a celebrity, and they appear to have it all together, you never know what somebody is going through," she emphasized.

Her candid story not only highlights her personal challenges but also raises important discussions about mental health and the right to privacy for celebrities.
