AceShowbiz - Former NFL player and accused murderer O.J. Simpson has passed away at the age of 76 after a battle with cancer, his family announced on Wednesday, April 10.

Simpson's family shared the news in a statement on his X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that he was surrounded by his children and grandchildren at the time of his death. According to TMZ, Simpson had been reportedly battling prostate cancer.

"On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer," the family's statement read. "He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace."

Simpson's attorney also confirmed his passing.

Simpson was a star football player who won the Heisman Trophy while at USC and played professionally for the San Francisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills. After his football career, he transitioned to acting and appeared in films such as "The Klansman," "The Cassandra Crossing," and "The Towering Inferno."

In 1994, Simpson became the subject of a sensational trial after he was accused of murdering his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman. Despite a not guilty verdict in the criminal trial, Simpson was later found liable for wrongful death and battery in a civil suit brought by the victims' families. He was ordered to pay $33.5 million in damages.

Simpson was later arrested and served almost nine years in prison for robbery, kidnapping, and other counts in a Las Vegas sports memorabilia scheme. He was released from prison in 2017.
