AceShowbiz - Taylor Swift may be a talented songwriter, but she did not write a novel which inspired "Argylle". Director Matthew Vaughn has addressed a conspiracy theory linking his upcoming movie to the country-turned-pop superstar.
In a conversation with Rolling Stone ahead of the film's release on February 2, the "Kingsman: The Secret Service" helmer said that he was first confronted about the speculation by his daughter. Much to his daughter's disappointment though, he vehemently denied any connection between his movie to the Grammy winner.
"I'm not a big internet guy, and it was actually my daughter who came up to me - this is the power of celebrity and the internet - and said, 'You never told me Taylor wrote the book!' " Vaughn said. "I'm looking at her going, 'What are you talking about Taylor Swift wrote the book? She didn't write the book!' I was laughing because I was like, 'It's not true! She didn't write the book!' But my daughter was convinced of it."
"There is an Elly Conway who wrote the book, but it's not Taylor Swift," the filmmaker stressed. "And I say that because I imagine Taylor Swift has a load of people trying to jump on her bandwagon left, right, and center, and I don't want to be a part of that club. I did read the conspiracies and I was like, wow, they don't leave a stone unturned! But it's not Taylor Swift. She definitely didn't write the book."
"Argylle" follows best-selling spy author Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard) as she's drawn into the activities of an underground global spy syndicate in a plot that closely mirrors the stories in her books. The movie was based on source material written by an author who goes by the pseudonym Elly Conway.
Internet sleuths later began linking the movie to Swift based on some details that could be Easter eggs. One of them was the book's cover, which features a Scottish Fold cat that looks similar to the singer/songwriter's pet Meredith Grey.
Meanwhile, Conway's identity remains a mystery. An Instagram account that belongs to the author has zero posts. Their biography on Penguin Random House's website states only that the writer "was born and raised in upstate New York" and wrote the Argylle novel "while working as a waitress in a late-night diner."
