'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' Swings Atop Box Office, Scores Second Biggest Debut in 2023

In addition to marking the second-biggest opening weekend of the year, the animated sequel movie from Sony is the third-biggest opening weekend for any 'Spider-Man' film.

AceShowbiz - "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" tops box office after it webs up a stellar $120.5 million in its domestic box office debut. The animated movie scores the second-biggest opening weekend of the year, behind only "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" with $146 million, beating expectations.

The number additionally makes "Across the Spider-Verse" the third-biggest opening weekend for any "Spider-Man" film. Sony's animated sequel collects another $88.1 million from 59 territories in its international box office debut as China leads with $17.3 million. That brings its worldwide total to $208.6 million in its first week.

"This is an exceptionally good opening for an animation follow-up sequel," says David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. " 'Spider-Verse' took a well-liked superhero, gave the storytelling an original visual style and voice and created a unique experience."

Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, the PG-rated movie cost $100 million in production. It follows Miles and Gwen Stacy (a.k.a. Spider-Woman) as they attempt to save their fellow Spider People from the villain who goes by the name the Spot. Shameik Moore voices Miles, while Hailee Steinfeld lends her voice to Gwen.

Back to the new Box Office chart, "The Little Mermaid (2023)" starring Halle Bailey as Ariel moves down to No. 2 with $40.6 million from 4,320 venues in its second weekend of release. The remake of Disney's popular has grossed $186 million in North America, while its worldwide total is $326 million.

"The Boogeyman", meanwhile, arrives at No. 3 on the chart. Starring "Yellowjackets" actor Sophie Thatcher and Chris Messina, it earns $11.5 million in North America in its debut week.

Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" takes the No. 4 spot. The superhero threequel, which features Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel and Karen Gillan among others, has generated additional $10.2 million, bringing its domestic gross to $332 million. In the international market, the Disney flick has earned a mighty $780 million.

Universal's "Fast X rounded out the Top 5 after adding $9.2 million to its $128 million at the domestic box office. The action movie is doing better at the international box office as its global ticket sales have gone over the $600 million.
