The actress, best known for her role on 'Cheers' and 'Veronica's Closet', has passed away at 71 after a short battle with cancer, her family confirms through her social media accounts.

AceShowbiz - Kirstie Alley has passed away. The famed actress died on Monday, December 5 after a private battle with cancer which she "only recently discovered," her family has confirmed. She was 71 years old.

Kirstie's children True and Lillie Parker announced the actress' passing via her official social media accounts. "To all our friends, far and wide around the world…," the statement posted on Instagram along with a picture of the "Cheers" alum smiling while posing on a bike read. We are sad to inform you that our incredible, fierce and loving mother has passed away after a battle with cancer, only recently discovered."

They continued, "She was surrounded by her closest family and fought with great strength, leaving us with a certainty of her never-ending joy of living and whatever adventures lie ahead. As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more amazing mother and grandmother."

"We are grateful to the incredible team of doctors and nurses at the Moffitt Cancer Center for their care," Kirstie's children added. Remembering her, they said, "Our mother's zest and passion for life, her children, grandchildren and her many animals, not to mention her eternal joy of creating, were unparalleled and leave us inspired to live life to the fullest just as she did."

"We thank you for your love and prayers and ask that you respect our privacy at this difficult time," they concluded.

Details of Kirstie's cancer and funeral arrangements for her have not been disclosed.

Meanwhile, John Travolta has led a tribute to the late actress. The "Grease" actor posted on his own Instagram page along with a throwback photo of the two of them. "Kirstie was one of the most special relationships I've ever had. I love you Kirstie. I know we will see each other again," he captioned it.

Kirstie rose to fame after starring as Rebecca Howe on NBC's sitcom "Cheers", which earned her an Emmy and Golden Globe Award. She earned Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for her role on the sitcom "Veronica's Closet". She also starred in TV movie "David's Mother" which earned her second Emmy Award.
