Despite being rejected from directing a solo movie for the 'X-Men' character, which left a big impact on him, the '21 Jump Street' actor insists that he 'would love to play' the role.

AceShowbiz - Channing Tatum has shared his devastation over "Gambit" cancellation. The "Magic Mike" star revealed in a new interview that he can't watch Marvel movies as he was left "traumatized" by the rejection.

"Once 'Gambit' went away, I was so traumatized," the 41-year-old actor said in this week's issue of Variety. "I shut off my Marvel machine. I haven't been able to see any of the movies."

Channing went on to say that he really "loved that character." The "21 Jump Street" actor further shared, "It was just too sad. It was like losing a friend because I was so ready to play him."

Channing previously tried to convince 20th Century Fox to let him direct a solo movie for Gambit, one of the "X-Men" characters. He wrote a script for the project alongside his longtime producing partner, Reid Carolin.

It turned out that the studio liked the idea but not with Channing directing it, which left a big impact on him. "The studio really didn't want us to direct it," he told the outlet. "They wanted anybody but us, essentially, because we had never directed anything."

Reid, who co-penned the "Magic Mike" movies, added that the reason "Gambit" fell through was because of the Fox and Disney merger that happened in 2019. He said the film was at "the one-yard line," and they had even picked actors.

"We had cast the film. We'd opened up a production office. We were on our way to shoot in New Orleans," Reid shared. He also added that he believes Disney wanted to "redesign the 'X-Men' from the ground up."

Despite being rejected, Channing admitted that he would gladly take on the role of Gambit if he were ever approached with the opportunity. "Uh, yeah, I would love to play Gambit," the star stated. "I don't think [I] should direct it. I think that was hubris on [my] part."

During the interview, Channing said that he felt the character he wrote was "the coolest person" who could pull anything off. He also commented on Gambit's fashion sense, noting, "Most superheroes, their outfits are utilitarian. Batman's got his belt. Gambit's like, 'No, this s**t's just fly, bro! This s**t walked down the Paris runway last year.' " He continued, "He's just wearing the stuff that's so dope because he loves fashion."
