Margot Robbie claimed her "Joker" co-star sent her "a nice love letter with a black box with a rat in it - a live rat" while they were playing twisted lovers on the big screen, but Leto recently dismissed the story, telling GQ he actually gifted the actress a "great vegan cinnamon bun."
That made Margot look like a fibber - while promoting the 2016 film, she confessed she loved her rat, kept it and grew quite fond of it, until she had to give it up.
"I was like, 'I'm not going to kill him,' " she explained. "So I ended up keeping him as a pet. I ended up getting him, like, a sweet little play pen, a slide, a hammock, and a leash because I wanted to take him."
So, who to believe? Now, Viola has set the record straight, revealing she was on set when Robbie received her rat and admitting she knew what was coming.
"I was saying loudly, 'Don't open the box!' " Viola tells British Vogue. "I was halfway out the door when she opened the box. She saw the biggest black rat you could imagine. Then... she cooed at it. No fear. Open. Receptive. Full of joy."
In his clarification about the dead rat story, Jared previously told GQ, "It's also interesting how this stuff all takes on a life of its own. I never gave Margot Robbie a dead rat. That's just not true." He added, "I actually gave her… I found this place in Toronto that had great vegan cinnamon buns, and that was a very common thing."
