The former 'Bachelor' couple confirms their split individually after he went back to his Colorado hometown following his coronavirus recovery at her family's home in Huntington Beach, California.

AceShowbiz - Colton Underwood and Cassie Randolph are a couple no more. After nearly two years of dating, the season 23 stars of "The Bachelor" announced their decision to call an end to their relationship, with him vowing in his social media post that their breakup does not mean to be the end of their story.

On Friday, May 29, Underwood turned to Instagram to share his thought on the split. "Its been a crazy few months to say the least, Cass and I have been doing a lot of self-reflecting," he wrote. "Sometimes people are just meant to be friends - and that's okay. We both have grown immensely and been through so much together - so this isn't the end of our story, it's the start of a whole new chapter for us."

Around the same time, Randolph issued a statement of her own. Along with a series of photos capturing their time together, she began, "First off, I want to say this is one of the hardest things I have had to share as neither one of us is quite ready to talk about it yet. However, because our relationship is such a public one, our silence on the matter has been speaking for us."

"Colton and I have broken up, but have decided to remain a part of each others lives," the 25-year-old went on explaining. "With all that we have gone through, we have a special bond that will always be there. I love Colton very much and have an enormous amount of respect for him. We have both learned and grown so much these past couple years, and will always have each others back. Always."

Underwood and Randolph's split came after he recovered from the novel coronavirus and went back to his hometown in Colorado. The former NFL player tested positive for COVID-19 in March, and had his then-girlfriend supported him throughout his quarantine time on the third floor of her family's home in Huntington Beach, California.

On the reality stars' breakup, a source told PEOPLE that it "happened recently" since the two "just weren't on the same page." The source added, "Ultimately, Colton and Cassie Colton really wanted to settle down and get married - he's been ready for a long time. And Cassie just wasn't ready. They both knew it wasn't going to work."

A separate source further noted that the decision to call it quits was mutual. "Colton and Cassie are still good friends, and they want to stay friends. It's definitely a priority for them," this second source explained. "Colton is sad, but he's looking forward to what the future may bring."

Underwood and Randolph met during the filming of the hit dating show which aired in 2019. They celebrated their one-year anniversary in November 2019, though he admitted in his memoir, "The First Time", that they briefly broke up in August.

About the short split, Underwood told PEOPLE in March 2020, "To put it very frank, after the show, we realized we weren't communicating as well as we once did. Nobody was forcing us to talk about real things going on, so we let a lot of things build up." He described it as "a very real and very emotional breakup."

Still, the 28-year-old saw the positive side of their breakup. "It was also very good to be real and emotional because it forced us to have conversations and move on," he explained. "Now, we know the flags to look for. When issues start to creep up, it's like, let's go have a conversation. We're trying to be more transparent and honest and really trust each other."
