AceShowbiz - Netflix's "The Crown" and Hulu's "The Handmaid's Tale" are among the favorites in TV category at this year's Writers Guild Awards. The two TV shows are up for the best drama series, battling it out with another Netflix show "Mindhunter" as well as with HBO's "Watchmen" and "Succession" which won an Emmy for the best writing for a drama series.

HBO adds two more nominations in the Comedy Series, giving it a total of four nods to its collection so far. The premium cable network's "Barry" and "Veep" are vying for the award against Amazon Prime's "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", Hulu's "PEN15", and Netflix's "Russian Doll".

"Russian Doll" is additionally a candidate for the best new series along with another Netflix's freshman "Dead to Me". The two new shows are joined in the stiff competition by "PEN15", "Watchmen", and FX's "What We Do in the Shadows".

HBO's "Game of Thrones" who concluded with its eighth and final season this year is unfortunately snubbed by the Writers Guild despite winning big at the Emmy Awards for the best drama series.

Another critic favorite "Fleabag" which bagged Emmy trophies for best comedy series and best writing for a comedy series is also absent from the list. It is not eligible for a nomination because its creator-writer, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, is not a member of the Writers Guild.

The guild also honors the best movie screenplay. The nominees will be announced Monday, January 6 while the winners for both the TV and movie will be celebrated at dual ceremonies during the 72nd annual WGA Awards February 1 in Los Angeles and New York.
