In a statement about the accolade, festival chairman Harold Matzner explains that the veteran filmmaker's latest film 'The Irishman' is a masterpiece and one of his finest.

AceShowbiz - Martin Scorsese is set to be honoured for his film "The Irishman" at the Palm Springs International Film Festival next year (2020).

"The Departed" filmmaker will be feted with the Sonny Bono Visionary Award on January 2.

"Martin Scorsese has directed another masterpiece about the world of organized crime with his latest film 'The Irishman', which brings to life the epic story of hitman Frank Sheeran," Festival chairman Harold Matzner says. "The film is one of Scorsese's finest and features outstanding performances from its stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. We are delighted to recognize Martin Scorsese with this year's Sonny Bono Visionary Award for this extraordinary directorial achievement."

Joaquin Phoenix, Charlize Theron and Renee Zellweger will also be feted at the festival, which runs from January 2 to 13.

Previous recipients of Scorsese's accolade include Alfonso Cuaron, and Quentin Tarantino.
