The 'How I Met Your Mother' alum is added to the cast of the upcoming new installment of the sci-fi film franchise, joining Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss who will be reprising their respective roles.

AceShowbiz - "The Matrix 4" is adding another big name to its cast ensemble. Emmy-winning actor Neil Patrick Harris has reportedly been tapped to star in the upcoming fourth installment of the sci-fi film franchise alongside returning stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss.

Harris' role is currently unknown as Variety, which first reported the news, states that sources close to the film would not confirm the "How I Met Your Mother" alum's specific role. He could be either playing a brand new character or a character that fans have seen before.

Jeff Sneider of Collider suggests that Harris might be playing the older version of Spoon Boy or a younger version of the Architect. A young Morpheus is rumored to appear in the fourth film as well, but it's not confirmed who will portray the character.

"Aquaman" star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was recently reported to be in talks for a lead role in "Matrix 4", but his role is also kept a secret.

Reeves will reprise his role as Neo, and Moss will return as Trinity. Lana Wachowski, who co-created "The Matrix" with her sibling Lilly Wachowski, is on board to direct and write the upcoming installment. The Wachowskis directed and wrote the first three installments of "The Matrix" film series.

Plot details of the fourth movie are still kept under wraps. The production is expected to begin February 2020 in Chicago. No release date has been set for the movie. Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and globally distribute the film.

Harris won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his role on "Glee". He's also nominated four times for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of Barney Stinson on "How I Met Your Mother". The 46-year-old actor is additionally known for playing Count Olaf on Netflix's series "A Series of Unfortunate Events".
