Just weeks after he celebrated his 80th birthday, the co-founder of the 'White Room' rock band is revealed through a Twitter statement to be 'critically ill in hospital.'

AceShowbiz - Cream drummer Ginger Baker is fighting for his life in hospital, according to his family.

Fans have been asked to pray for the rock legend via a post on his official Twitter page on Wednesday, September 25, as those closest to him reveal he is "critically ill".

The sad news comes just weeks after Baker celebrated his 80th birthday.

A Twitter statement reads: "The Baker family are sad to announce that Ginger is critically ill in hospital. Please keep him in your prayers tonight."

It is not known why Ginger is in the hospital, but he has been struggling with health issues for years - in 2013 he announced he had been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease caused by decades of smoking. He has also battled chronic back pain as a result of degenerative osteoarthritis, and in 2016 he underwent open-heart surgery.

Baker co-founded Cream in 1966 with Eric Clapton and bassist Jack Bruce. He later joined Clapton in Blind Faith with Steve Winwood.

The drummer then founded the band Air Force before going solo.

Baker also worked with African musician Fela Kuti on a series of projects.

His life was chronicled in the documentary "Beware of Mr Baker", which was released in 2013.

He also released a biography, "Ginger Baker: Hellraiser".
