AceShowbiz - Joaquin Phoenix's turn as Batman villain The Joker in Todd Phillips' dark new movie has picked up the Golden Lion award for best movie at the Venice Film Festival.

"Joker" beat out the competition in the main category to officially enter the Oscar race, while embattled director Roman Polanski's "An Officer and a Spy" landed the Grand Jury Prize.

There were also big wins for filmmaker Roy Andersson, who picked up the Silver Lion for Best Director, Ariane Ascaride (Best Actress), and Luca Marinelli (Best Actor).
