'The Fast and the Furious' spin-off easily dethrones the Disney live-action remake at the domestic chart and grosses $180 million globally in its first week.

AceShowbiz - "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw" has led the competition at this week's North American box office. The spin-off to the hit "The Fast and the Furious" franchise debuts atop the chart with approximately $60.8 million.

While the first weekend result met the studio's expectations, it fell behind most of its predecessors. In fact, the Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Jason Statham-starring movie posts the smallest domestic debut for a "Fast & Furious" film since 2006's "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift".

But driven by its performance in international markets, the movie is right on its track to become another big hit for the franchise. "Hobbs & Shaw" has collected $120 million internationally for a current global total of $180 million.

"It's super encouraging and really tells about how broad this franchise plays," says Jim Orr, Universal's president of domestic distribution. "We are obviously all extraordinarily excited to see this homegrown 'Fast & Furious' franchise break out down another avenue."

Orr is optimistic that the movie would go bigger in the following weeks, after it opens in more countries including a big market like China. He adds, "We're very thrilled with the global release, a tremendous start with a big market like China still to come."

"Hobbs & Shaw" easily pushes "The Lion King (2019)" from the throne. The Disney live-action remake of its 1994 classic animated movie has added approximately $38.2 million to its domestic revenue while it's moved to the second place in its third week.

"Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" is also down one spot to No. 3 with an estimated $20 million on its second weekend, followed by other holdovers. Sitting on the fourth place is "Spider-Man: Far From Home" with approximately $7.8 million, while "Toy Story 4" trails close behind with an estimated $7.2 million.
