While she isn't surprised by fans' lukewarm reception, the actress known for her portrayal of Rey in the 2017 movie stands behind director Rian Johnson's vision.

AceShowbiz - "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" star Daisy Ridley admits the backlash against the film was "fair".

The actress discussed the lukewarm reception the sci-fi film received from fans, who gave the film a poor audience score on review compilation website Rotten Tomatoes, with USA Today.

"I wasn't surprised, no. It's just a different thing," she told the outlet when asked about the disappointing response. "Everyone's going to have an opinion now anyway on the internet, but I also think it's fair."

Though Ridley understands the high level of expectation for the 2017 instalment of the beloved franchise, she stands behind director Rian Johnson's vision.

"If people hold something incredibly dear and think they know how it should be and it's not like that, it's fair for people to think they were done wrong. It doesn't mean they were – ultimately, Rian's a filmmaker and one person can't dictate how a film is supposed to be – but freedom of expression, sure."

Ridley is set to reprise the role of Rey in "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker", which hits cinemas in December (2019).
