The actress nominated for an Academy Award for her role in 'Midnight Cowboy' actress is reported to have been struggling with respiratory problems in months prior to her death.

AceShowbiz - Oscar-nominated actress Sylvia Miles has died.

The screen star passed away on Wednesday, June 12 in New York, aged 94.

According to TMZ, the Big Apple native had been struggling with respiratory problems in recent months, and had previously been receiving treatment at a nursing home.

She began her career in the theatre in the late 1940s, and soon moved into TV and film, landing the role of Sally Rogers in the pilot episode of "The Dick Van Dyke Show", although the part was eventually given to actress Rose Marie.

Miles scored her big break in classic Jon Voight movie "Midnight Cowboy" in 1969, earning her her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, even though she only appeared onscreen for just six minutes.

She received her second nod in 1975 for another brief performance in "Farewell, My Lovely".

Her other film credits included "Wall Street" in 1987 and its 2010 sequel, "Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps", as well as Andy Warhol's "Heat", "Critical Condition", "Crossing Delancey", and "She-Devil", in which she portrayed Meryl Streep's movie mum.

She was also a regular on TV, featuring in "Sex and the City", "NYPD", One "Life to Live", and "All My Children", among many other shows.
