While on 'Today' show, the 'All I Wanna Do' hitmaker describes the late country music icon as 'a great American patriot' and recalls a 'great conversation' she shared with him before he died.

AceShowbiz - Sheryl Crow grows emotional whenever she performs her Johnny Cash duet "Redemption Day" because she's reminded of a "great conversation" she shared with the country legend before he died.
The singer originally released the track as part of her self-titled album in 1996, and the anti-war lyrics struck such a chord with country music icon Cash, he decided to record a cover just before he passed away in 2003.
Crow, who penned the song after visiting U.S. troops in Bosnia, has since revamped the tune once more, using Cash's vocals to create a posthumous duet version of "Redemption Day" for her upcoming collaborations album, "Threads", and hearing him croon her poignant words is always a moving experience.
"This is gonna be the cornerstone of my record...," she tells U.S. breakfast show "Today". "It's about freedom, it's about what these people (military) do to make sure that we have the freedoms that we have...".
"It's really amazing," Sheryl shares of the Cash duet. "I had a great conversation with him before he passed about this song. He said, 'I really wanna know every line of this song, why you wrote it'."
"He was so outspoken about the way he felt about the Iraq War, about Vietnam, he defended Native Americans, and so he's just a great American patriot. To hear him singing these words is very emotional."
"Threads" will also include Sheryl's duets with Keith Richards, Stevie Nicks, and Eagles members Don Henley and Joe Walsh, as well as Bonnie Raitt and Mavis Staples, who feature on her new single, "Live Wire".
