Weeks after the premiere of its season 3 in late March, Netflix announces that executives at the streaming platform have pulled the plug on the Victor Fresco-created series.

AceShowbiz - Drew Barrymore's Netflix show "Santa Clarita Diet" has been cancelled after three seasons.

Executives at the streaming platform announced on Friday, April 26, that they had pulled the plug on the show - which also starred Timothy Olyphant and was created by Victor Fresco - just weeks after the season three premiere last month.

"The world has never known a 'zom-com' until 'Santa Clarita Diet', and we're indebted to creator Victor Fresco for bringing this idea to Netflix," a representative said in a statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

A reason for the show's demise was not given, though bosses did praise the cast and crew for their efforts on the hit programme.

"To their endless credit, the incredible Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant were totally game, with an uncanny knack for comedy that brought Sheila and Joel Hammond to vibrant life, even though one of them was undead," they added.

"Santa Clarita Diet" follows married realtors Sheila and Joel Hammond, as played by Barrymore and Olyphant, as they raise their daughter in Santa Clarita, California.

However, their lives are turned upside down when Sheila suddenly dies and transitions into a flesh-eating zombie.

In light of the news, Barrymore, who was also an executive producer on the show, told the outlet that working on the show was "delightful".

"It was an honour to get to do something so delightful. Of all the characters I've ever been, Sheila Hammond is one of my favourites," the 44-year-old gushed.

While Olyphant, 50, joked that he was going to continue to come and work on "Santa Clarita Diet", even though it had been scrapped.

"I loved working on this show. I'm going to continue coming in and doing scenes. If they don't want to film it, that's up to them," he quipped.
