The Brie Larson-starring superhero movie has the best opening weekend of 2019 so far with approximately $153 million.

AceShowbiz - "Captain Marvel" took off to a great start. The latest tentpole from Marvel's superhero film franchise had a massive opening with an estimated $153 million domestically in ticket sales at 4,310 theaters in the U.S. and Canada to become a new champion at North American box office.

It is the first title of the year to open to more than $100 million, making it the best opening weekend of 2019 so far. It is also the seventh biggest opening for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the second-biggest debut for a superhero pic led by a new Marvel character, behind 2018's hit "Black Panther".

Internationally, the Brie Larson-starring movie propelled to $302 million, bringing its worldwide start to an estimated $455 million so far. It's the fifth highest international weekend of all time and the sixth largest global debut ever.

"Captain Marvel" marked a major milestone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it is their first female-led superhero film. Leading to its highly-anticipated debut, the movie was sandbagged by sexist trolls on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, but it didn't lessen the interest of moviegoers. The film holds an approval rating of 80% based on 355 reviews from critics and audience gave it an average grade of "A" on CinemaScore.

"Marvel Studios once again proves that stories combining diverse perspectives and different experiences make great movies that play to everybody. People crave representation," Disney distribution chief Cathleen Taff raves about the movie. "She definitely pushed us higher, further, faster."

"Captain Marvel" helps resurrect the domestic box office, which has been struggling in the first two months of the year. "We're going to have one of the biggest box-office years ever, but looking at the first two months, you wouldn't know it," says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore.

Last week's champion "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World" showed little to no competition to the biggest newcomer this week, relinquishing the throne and falling to No. 2 with an estimated $14.7 million. "Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral" is close behind at No. 3 with approximately $12 million.

"The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part" holds on to its fourth position with additional $3.8 million, while "Alita: Battle Angel" drops two spots to No. 5 with approximately $3.2 million.
