The review aggregator site purged 50,000 user comments which were posted before the movie's release, but the Brie Larson-starring movie still got a low score of 35 percent from 7,000 users.

AceShowbiz - Rotten Tomatoes' problem isn't over after not allowing people to leave a review or comment on a movie before its release. With "Captain Marvel" release on Friday, the site has activated the comments for the female-driven superhero film and the movie was immediately torpedoed by negative reviews from Internet users.

As of Friday morning at 8 A.M., the film had a 33 percent audience score from more than 58,000 reviews. It was more than the number of the total audience reviews for "Avengers: Infinity War" for its entire theatrical run.

The site then purged roughly 50,000 user comments, whether they be positive or negative, seemingly removing the reviews submitted before the movie is being released. The number of reviews now dropped to 7,000, but the Brie Larson-starring movie still got a low score of 35 percent.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Rotten Tomatoes explains that a glitch caused the thousands of reviews showing up on the site when they shouldn't have. "We launched some changes to the movie pre-release functionality last week, which included not allowing users to leave a comment or review prior to a movie's release in theaters. However, we still invite users to vote if they 'want to see' a movie prior to its release, and that vote total is displayed on the site," the statement reads.

It further details the problem, "We have identified a bug in the post-release functionality for the movies that have released into theaters since our product update last week. The quantity of user ratings (which is displayed directly below the audience score and is intended to only include the quantity of users who have left a rating or written review after a movie's release) had included both pre-release and post-release fan voting."

The low audience score on Rotten Tomatoes doesn't seem to deter people's interest in watching "Captain Marvel" since the movie is projected to make $160 million over its first weekend. Most people even realize that the users' negative reviews on the review aggregator site do not reflect the real quality of the movie, since they were mostly fueled by sexism.

Film critic Scott Mendelson reacted to the low audience score for "Captain Marvel", "This is a problem for absolutely no one except ROTTEN TOMATOES. If they want us to take their audience user scores remotely seriously, they need to do something about this."

Another commented, "They got rid of 54,000 audience reviews for #CaptainMarvel , and they're still in the thirties, great job rotten tomatoes."

Another Twitter user pointed out that some of the negative reviews were submitted by fake users. "And yes that horrible Captain Marvel Rotten Tomatoes score is from bots," he wrote.

Another sarcastically tweeted, "@RottenTomatoes How are so many fake reviews able to be posted?? Credit to @TheChrisFerrell #CaptainMarvel has more reviews in less than a day that #AvengersInfinityWar in eleven months..."

Despite the low audience score, "Captain Marvel" is rated fresh on the site with an approval rating of 81% from critics' reviews.
