After it was announced that the 'Singin' in the Rain' director has passed away at 94, Guillermo del Toro, Edgar Wright and Christopher McQuarrie also take to social media to pay their respects.

AceShowbiz - Steven Spielberg has paid a touching tribute to "Singin' in the Rain" director Stanley Donen following his recent passing.

The filmmaker and choreographer, who was famed for classic movie musicals like "Two For the Road", "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", and "Funny Face", died on Thursday, February 21, but the news of his loss only emerged on Saturday.

A number of directors have since saluted Donen's memory, with Spielberg releasing a statement about the man he considered a "friend and early mentor".

"His generosity in giving over so many of his weekends in the late 60's to film students like me to learn about telling stories and placing lenses and directing actors is a time I will never forget," Spielberg wrote, naming "Charade", "Bedazzled", and "Two For the Road" his "favorites" of Donen's work.

"When visiting New York I will miss not bumping into him on his daily walks and hear him talking about life and film which for Stanley were inseparable," he added.

Meanwhile, Spielberg's peers took to social media to pay their respects.

"A brilliant storyteller- elegant, exuberant, a master of color and top crane choreographer. We are indebted to him for as long as there is Cinema," tweeted Guillermo del Toro.

"RIP the great Stanley Donen, some feat to have multiple classics in both musicals, but also comedies, thrillers, dramas," director Edgar Wright wrote, while "Mission: Impossible - Fallout" filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie posted: "Stanley Donen understood when to move and when to let others do the moving."

Donen was 94.
