On the casting of the two actors and Evangeline Lilly for the opioid thriller, director Nicholas Jarecki says that the trio are perfect 'to bring the human face of this epidemic to audiences everywhere.'

AceShowbiz - Gary Oldman and Armie Hammer are set to headline opioids thriller "Dreamland (2021)".

The Hollywood stars have signed on to star in director Nicholas Jarecki's latest project, according to Deadline, with the shoot already underway in Detroit and Montreal.

Few details about the plot of "Dreamland" have been made available, though the story is believed to focus on three narrative threads involving a drug trafficker smuggling opioids between the U.S. and Canada, an architect recovering from an OxyContin addiction, as well as a university professor investigating links between the drug company he is employed by and the government.

It is unclear what roles Oldman and Hammer will take on in the film. "Ant-Man and the Wasp" star Evangeline Lilly and German actress Veronica Ferres will also have key parts.

"The devastating impact of the opioid crisis reaches all corners of society," said Jarecki in a statement. "Gary, Armie, and Evangeline are the perfect performers to bring the human face of this epidemic to audiences everywhere."

Jarecki will direct from his own script. The project is his largest since his 2010 drama-thriller "Arbitrage", which saw lead actor Richard Gere receive a Golden Globe nomination for his performance. The filmmaker has also written and directed 2009 short "The Weight" and 2005 documentary "The Outsider".

Meanwhile, Oldman is currently working on a string of films, including "The Woman in the Window", "The Laundromat", and "Killers Anonymous". He won the 2018 Academy Award, BAFTA and Golden Globe for Best Actor for his work as Winston Churchill in 2017 war drama "Darkest Hour".

Hammer has a number of projects lined-up too, and was most recently appeared in "Hotel Mumbai" and in "On the Basis of Sex". He is attached to appear as Simon Doyle in Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of "Death on the Nile", also starring Gal Gadot and Jodie Comer.

A release date for "Dreamland" has not yet been announced.
