AceShowbiz - Netflix is reportedly setting its eye on "Resident Evil" franchise. The streaming giant is developing an original, live-action TV series based on the hit action horror video game by Capcom, according to Deadline.

The site claims that the planned series is currently in the works with German production and distribution company Constantin Film, which is behind the "Resident Evil" movies, attached as the studio. It is further said that the streaming service is still looking for a showrunner to shepherd the new series.

As for the story, Deadline reveals that the new take on the hit franchise is set to expand the "Resident Evil" universe and deepen the existing mythology. It is also said that the new adaptation will keep the basic premise, which also serves as a setup for the movie franchise.

The drama series, meanwhile, is poised to explore the dark inner workings of the Umbrella Corporation and the new world order caused by the outbreak of the T-virus. The series, which is in early stages, will incorporate all of 'Resident Evil' 's signature elements, including action sequences and "easter eggs."

"Resident Evil" movie franchise first launched in 2002. So far, there are six movies all of which are produced by Constantin Film that acquired the rights to the video game series with Screen Gems distributing. The film franchise has cumulatively raked in $1.2 billion worldwide, making it as the the highest-grossing film series ever based on a video game.

Following the release of 2016's "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter", which starred Milla Jovovich, Constantin Film is attempting to reboot the franchise. A potential movie reboot with a new cast was previously announced, with Johannes Roberts tapped to write and direct.
