The Golden Globe-winning filmmaker confesses to making this crude joke on the set decades ago, but now he's 'embarrassed' and 'deeply' sorry for it.

AceShowbiz - Amidst the attention he's got for directing awards-winning movie "Green Book", Peter Farrelly's not-so-graceful past is unearthed. On Wednesday, January 9, The Cut revealed an excerpt from a Newsweek story back in 1998 which revealed the filmmaker's penchant for displaying his penis as a joke.

One of his victims was Cameron Diaz, who still spoke highly of the director despite his shocking prank, "When a director shows you his penis the first time you meet him, you've got to recognize the creative genius." Fox executive Tom Rothman also once got into his ploy, admitting, "I have been flashed. It wasn't a pretty sight. In fact, I'm still recovering."

In a 1998 Observer article, Peter, who used to team up with his brother Bobby Farrelly to prank their victims, shared the details of how their tricks worked. "It's a joke," Peter said of his act. "It's not like I make a habit of just whipping it out and saying, 'Hey! Look! My cock!' We do a joke where, it's like, Bob says, 'Pete's been really crazy, he went out and spent $ 500 on a belt buckle.' I go, 'Bob, it's an investment, it's not a big deal.' He says, 'You're stupid! $ 500 on a belt buckle!' I say it's not stupid ... Finally she says, 'Let me see it.' And I lift my shirt and have it...hanging over."

Now that his past crude jokes are brought up on the heels of sexual misconduct allegations in Hollywood, Peter expresses his regret. "True. I was an idiot," he says in a statement via his representative. "I did this decades ago and I thought I was being funny and the truth is I'm embarrassed and it makes me cringe now. I'm deeply sorry."

Cameron, who starred in the Farrelly brothers' 1998 comedy "There's Something About Mary", has not commented on the resurfacing story.

Peter won best screenplay award at the 2019 Golden Globes, sharing it with Brian Hayes Currie and Nick Vallelonga. He was also nominated for best director and the movie was nominated for best drama picture at the show.
