AceShowbiz - The King of Atlantis shows off his power by topping the holiday box office. DCEU movie "Aquaman" swims his way to the top of the box office at the busy pre-Christmas weekend with an estimated $67.4 million.
Starring Jason Momoa as the titular character, the latest DC Comics superhero film grosses around $72.1 million in U.S. and Canada theaters against its $200 million production budget. The new number brings its global total to $482.8 million.
"We really kick off starting Tuesday," says Warner Bros. distribution chief Jeff Goldstein, adding that the "Aquaman" performance came in just above the studio's $65 million forecast. "With kids not really returning to school until January 7, this aligns the stars for us in a really positive way."
Meanwhile, "Mary Poppins Returns" makes a modest debut. Featuring Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda, the Rob Marshall-directed "Mary Poppins" sequel lands at No. 2 with approximately $22.2 million over the weekend. With that, the movie reeled in #31 million in the North America market since opening Wednesday.
Despite the slightly disappointing performance for a musical that cost $130 million to make, the flick receives spectacular reviews. Rotten Tomatoes gives the Disney musical 77 percent, while CinemaScore rates the movie as A-minus.
"It's a great weekend to start yourself off on a launch pad into the holiday period," Cathleen Taff, head of distribution for Disney, reveals. "We're looking forward to great word of mouth building over the next few weeks. And we're looking forward to a long run."
"Mary Poppins Returns" narrowly tops "Bumblebee" which debuts with $21 million domestically. Last week's topper "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" plummets to the fourth spot with $16.7 million, bringing its total domestic gross to $64.8 million.
Rounding out the Top 5 of this weekend's box office is "The Mule". The R-rated Warner Bros. movie, which cost $50 million to produce, falls from its No. 2 spot last week as it rakes an estimated $9.95 million over the weekend.
