Whether it's helping people get out of burning car or saving people who are drowning, these celebrities seemingly don't even care if they are the ones who end up getting hurt.

AceShowbiz - There are many ways that celebrities take to help other people. While most of them usually donate thousand or even million dollars to those in need, some others take things to a whole new level and put their lives in danger for the sake of saving others.

From helping people get out of burning cars to saving people who are drowning, these celebrities seemingly don't even care if they are the ones who end up getting hurt. Still, their action are greatly praised by people, to the point that they are dubbed "real-life heroes." Those who are helped even note that they won't be alive if these celebrities don't come to their rescue.

So, who are those brave celebrities? Let's take a look!

1. Sean Penn

When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans back in 2005, Sean Penn was among the celebrities who offered help to save the victims. He attempted to rescue the victim using a small boat, but it sprang a leak within seconds of its launch. Penn didn't give up though, scooping water out of it with a plastic cup. After much struggles and effort, he managed to save about forty stranded victims.

"I witnessed him rescuing up to 40 people," Douglas Brinkley said at the time, before referencing to the actor's infamous trip to Iraq. "He was up to his waist in toxic muck... I'm not going to comment on Sean's trips to Iraq or Iran, but in this case, he was an American hero."

2. Hall and Oates

John Oates and Daryn Hall from Hall and Oates had an unexpected turn of event when they stopped at a bar in Melbourne, Australia during their tour in 1980. A masked man walked in with a sawed-off shotgun and demanded money from both customers and waitresses. Without thinking too much, Oates rushed to the dude and actually knocked him through a plate-glass window.

The police then arrived to pick the robber up as Oates was casually standing on his wrist to stop the masked man from getting away. That was when they found out that the man was no ordinary robber. The band had caught an infamous criminal whom the local media had dubbed the "Rusty Gun Bandit."

3. Mark Harmon

Before Mark Harmon becomes a special agent on "NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service", he played a real-life hero when a local man was trapped inside a burning car in front of the star's Brentwood home in 1996. Recalling the moment, Colin Specht noted that Harmon came to his aid by breaking a window open with a sledgehammer and pulling him out of a car. Even though he ended up in hospital for months due to the accident, he was greatly grateful for what the actor did to rescue him.

"I owe everything to him. Everything in my life," he said. "I have no doubt that I would not be alive without his help." He added, "He has more to lose than most people would at that point. He had a wife, children. Not only that, he had the career that was based on his face and his looks." Meanwhile, Harmon himself refused to take credits for his heroic action until today, noting that it was only natural for him to help Specht.

4. Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman had not only played the on-screen superhero Wolverine, but also a real-life superhero when he and his family enjoyed a beach outing in Australia. The 50-year-old was caught on camera saving children from dangerous surf at Bondi Beach in Sydney.

The clip, which was aired on local channel Nine Network, showed him hauling a man and a child from the waves. After that, "The Greatest Showman" actor helped his own son Oscar out of the same rip, a dangerous ocean current.

5. Steve Buscemi

People may recognize Steve Buscemi as a "strangely attractive shoelace," but little did they know he used to be a firefighter back in 1980s. And when the Twin Towers were attacked in September 2001, he put his life on the line by returning to his old job and helped firefighters search for survivors in the rubble of the World Trade Center.

It's worth noting that he didn't do it just once. The actor worked 12-hour shifts for several days alongside other firefighters. When people tried to get photos and interviewed him during his shift, the actor outright refused. He later broke his silence and said, "It was a privilege to be able to do it," adding that he only wanted to help out because many firefighters were missing along with the rest of the innocent people who had been affected by the terrorist attack.

6. Ray Davies

Ray Davies had a rather unfortunate event when he tried to save a woman who was robbed in New Orleans. He was strolling through the city when a gunman jumped out out a passing car and demanded the woman's purse before running off. The singer then chased the gunman and his companion, but one of them turned and fired him. He ended up wounded in the leg.

Despite the singer's injury, the robber was eventually arrested and charged with armed robbery and aggravated battery. Davies himself was treated in a local hospital and released a day after. Police chief Eddie Compass said of the incident, "I'm sorry for what happened but Mr. Davies showed poor judgment in running after the individuals."

7. Nomar Garciaparra

Nomar Garciaparra isn't only great at playing baseball, but also swimming. Back in 2005, the retired baseball player and his uncle rescued two women who had fallen into Boston Harbor. According to an eyewitness, Nomar immediately sprinted once he heard a scream and a splash at 10 P.M. and jumped over walls. Meanwhile, his uncle jumped off a balcony to save the girls.

"A bunch of us came running over and sure enough, pulling the two girls from the water was Nomar," the witness said. "It was crazy. Nomar was like jumping over walls to get to the girls and the other guy leaped off the balcony. It was unbelievable."

8. Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet's character in "Titanic" might barely survive an iceberg, but the Oscar-winning actress successfully acted a hero in a fire that ravaged Richard Branson's private home in British Virgin island. Kate bravely carried his 90-year-old mom out of the burning home to safety after the home was struck by lighting during the romping Hurricane Irine in 2011.

"She carried my mom out of the house. My mom is 90 and can walk but it was more just to speed the process up than anything else but anyway, she was great," Richard said of the actress' heroic deed. "She swept her up into her arms and got her out of the house as fast as possible."
