AceShowbiz - "The Chronicles of Narnia" will be heading to Netflix. The streaming giant has closed a multi-year deal with the C.S. Lewis Company to develop new series and film projects based on the popular series. It marks the first time that the same company has held the rights to all seven "Narnia" books.

Douglas Gresham, stepson of Lewis, confirmed the news in a statement released by Netflix. "It is wonderful to know that folks from all over are looking forward to seeing more of 'Narnia', and that the advances in production and distribution technology have made it possible for us to make Narnian adventures come to life all over the world," he said. "Netflix seems to be the very best medium with which to achieve this aim, and I am looking forward to working with them towards this goal."

The entire project will be executive produced by Mark Gordan of Entertainment One, Douglas Gresham and Vincent Sieber. " 'Narnia' is one of those rare properties that spans multiple generations and geographies," Gordon said, adding that he hoped to "translate the 'Narnia' universe into both stellar feature-length and episode programming."

With that, Netflix is now hoping to build a "Chronicles of Narnia" cinematic universe in the vein of properties like "Star Trek" and Marvel cinematic universes.

"The Chronicles of Narnia" follows the story of four British children during World War II who escape into an alternate magic world. The series have sold more than 100 million copies and been translated in more than 47 languages.

Before Netflix, Disney have adapted the first three series of the book, "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" (2005), "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" (2008) and "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" (2010). The three films have grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide among them.
