Although the 'Insecure' actress had previously stated, 'You gotta explore life without Lawrence,' she insists that she didn't mean the character won't return in the series' latest season.

AceShowbiz - Issa Rae has insisted she never actually said that Lawrence wouldn't feature in season three of "Insecure".

Ahead of the season premiere, writer and actress Issa revealed in an interview that the third season of the HBO show would revolve around character Issa's life without her ex-boyfriend, leading to backlash from fans of the character, known as the #LawrenceHive. And actor Jay Ellis' return in episode five came as a genuine shock to many who thought they had seen the last of Lawrence.

"So glad we got people," Issa smiled to Entertainment Tonight at Rihanna's 4th Annual Diamond Ball in New York City on Thursday, September 13. "I was sure that the secret was going to be out. We were very worried about the fact that people were going to know (he was in season three). And then people were surprised, and that's the best feeling ever."

And she insisted that she had never actually said that Lawrence would no longer be a part of the series, even though the 33-year-old told Vulture in July, "You never see the exes again. And it's okay! You gotta explore life without Lawrence."

"I didn't! That was the advantage of it," she exclaimed to ET. "Every time I did an interview people were like, 'I heard Lawrence isn't coming back.' So I was like, if this is being served to us, let's use it. But I never said, myself, you never heard it out of my lips, 'Lawrence isn't coming back this season'... People just took the news and ran with it."

Issa served as host for Rihanna's glamorous gala in aid of her nonprofit organisation, the Clara Lionel Foundation, which saw Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) provide the entertainment. Speculation has been rife that she is working on a movie project for the "Diamonds" star, but she remained tight-lipped on details.

"First of all when Rihanna asks you to do something, you do it. So rumours or not, I'm here," Issa said of her hosting gig. "I would love to write for her."
