'I tried to drown myself in the pool when I was in the fourth or fifth grade,' the funnyman says in an interview.

AceShowbiz - Pete Davidson has opened up about a childhood suicide attempt following the death of his father in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The "Saturday Night Live" comedian was just seven years old when he lost his firefighter father, Scott, during the New York terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, which killed nearly 3,000 people and injured over 6,000 others.

Now 24, Pete has revealed how the tragic loss resulted in him being admitted to a number of mental health facilitates throughout his childhood and teens and even saw him attempt to "drown himself" as a child.

"I tried to drown myself in the pool when I was in the fourth or fifth grade," he shared candidly in an interview with Variety. "I was trying to get my head stuck in the ladder in the deep end, so I would not be able to get up. But I'm too much of a p**sy, and my head is too small."

The premature loss of his father affected Pete in other ways, too. Specifically, the funnyman believes he wouldn't be a successful comedian and engaged to popstar Ariana Grande if the major life event hadn't taken place.

"If my dad didn't die, I wouldn't be a comic," he admitted. "I'd be a construction worker in Staten Island or a basketball coach."

Acknowledging how the tragedy has changed his whole outlook on life, he added: "I learned what death was. And you're not really supposed to learn about that until high school, when one of your friends falls asleep in the garage, or whatever.

"To learn how anything can just be taken away from you early gave me this sense of 'F**k it. Whatever, dude.' I'm able to do stand-up and f**k around because hopefully the worst thing that has ever happened to me happened."

Both Ariana and Pete have matching tattoos dedicated to the comedian's late father. The 25-year-old songstress was seen sporting the numbers '8418' - believed to be Scott's firefighter badge number - on the top of her foot in July, while Pete is said to have the same numbers inked on his left forearm.

Pete, Shawn Mendes and Amandla Stenberg were all honoured at Variety's Power of Young Hollywood event on Tuesday, August 28.
