AceShowbiz - Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith has reportedly landed another major sci-fi role after stepping into the Star Wars universe.
The Brit, who also played Prince Philip in Netflix hit The Crown, has signed on to join the cast of director J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode IX, according to Deadline.
Nothing is known about the actor's new movie role or even if he'll play a hero or villain in the next Star Wars film, which alsos features returning stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Billy Dee Williams, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Adam Driver, and the late Carrie Fisher.
Bosses at Disney and Lucasfilm shared the news Fisher's Princess Leia Organa character will be back in the next installment of the sci-fi series last month, as Abrams explained he would be piecing together unused clips from 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, to resurrect Carrie's iconic character for the sequel to 2017's The Last Jedi.
"Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us," he shared in a statement issued to Variety. "We were never going to recast, or use a CG (computer-generated) character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie (Lourd), we have found a way to honour Carrie's legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII".
Keri Russell and Richard E. Grant have also been added to the cast of the next Star Wars epic, as has Lord of the Rings star Dominic Monaghan.
Abrams, who directed and produced Star Wars: The Force Awakens, has started pre-production on the next Star Wars Episode IX blockbuster, which will be released in December, 2019.
