AceShowbiz - Kelsey Grammer has backed ABC network bosses' decision to cancel Roseanne Barr's sitcom after she tweeted an offensive joke.
The "Frasier" actor has complained about suffering unfair treatment in Hollywood due to his conservative political views in the past.
However, when asked about Barr's firing in late May for a racially charged tweet directed towards Valerie Jarrett, one of former U.S. President Barack Obama's aides, Grammer said that although he thinks people are too quick to condemn, stars should expect to face repercussions if they say something that upsets their employers.
"Obviously, some lines have been drawn," the 63-year-old told The Guardian. "People are swift to judge, swift to react, swift to punish. I don't think it's the best side of us to punish everybody who says something that we don't particularly like. The first amendment (guaranteeing freedom of speech in the U.S.) is an important part of our lives and of our culture. But you work for certain people and they don't like what you said, and they'll fire you. And that's the way it goes."
The Roseanne revival was initially hailed as a triumph, with Barr earning praise for her depiction of a working-class character who supports America's controversial President Donald Trump - who she has also personally endorsed.
However, "Last Man Standing" star Tim Allen has taken a different view over Barr's firing. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the comedian strongly criticised ABC executives' decision to cancel Roseanne's show.
"There's things you can't say, there's things you shouldn't say. Who makes up these rules? As a stand-up comic, it's a very dangerous position for me to be in because I like pushing buttons. It's very sensitive," the 65-year-old commented. "I don't know what Roseanne (meant) ... but that's not the woman I know. Whatever came out of that, whatever she said by that, she is inclusive and tolerant. It's unfortunate."
