The 23-year-old singer is currently at number one with her hit summer anthem 'Boo'd Up'.

AceShowbiz - Ella Mai has become the first British artist to reach the summit of Billboard's R&B chart in more than a quarter of a century.

The 23-year-old singer is currently at number one with "Boo'd Up", her huge summer anthem that's taken the U.S. by storm, despite first being released last year.

While Brits Paul McCartney, Charli XCX and Kyla have made appearances in the chart as featured artists on U.S. R&B number ones, Ella is the first to reach its peak as a lead artist for 26 years.

"1992, before I was born," she tweeted in celebration. "First in my lifetime. INSANE!"

The last British artist to top the influential chart was Lisa Stansfield with song "All Woman" back in 1992.

"Boo'd Up", which originally featured on Ella's six-song Ready EP last February, enjoyed a slow rise to the top, receiving support from fans and celebrities alike including Chris Brown.

Nicki Minaj and Quavo feature on the song's recent remix.

While she's enjoying huge success in the U.S., the singer, who is signed to U.S. producer DJ Mustard's label, is virtually unknown in her home country, with Boo'd Up currently languishing at number 62 in the charts.

Ella will appear at BBC 1Xtra Live alongside Chance The Rapper, Jorja Smith and Pusha T at the O2 Arena in London 22 September.
