AceShowbiz - Nia Vardalos's estranged husband Ian Gomez has responded to his wife filing for divorce.
The My Big Fat Greek Wedding star announced the split on Tuesday, July 03, and revealed she and Gomez had separated almost a year ago.
"We've been respectfully separated for a lengthy period of time," she said. "Our relationship became a friendship, so the decision to end the marriage is completely mutual and amicable.
"It is our hope that decency will prevail on the reporting of this story which will soon be yesterday’s news. Thank you for respecting our privacy."
Vardalos cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason behind her divorce filing on Tuesday.
The 55-year-old Cougar Town actor also cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split in legal documents on Thursday, and both he and Vardalos are seeking joint legal and physical custody of the couple's daughter, Ilaria, who they adopted in 2008.
Her hit film My Big Fat Greek Wedding was inspired by her romance with Gomez, who played the role of best man to John Corbett’s character Ian Miller. The couple, who wed in 1993, also co-hosted the first two seasons of reality cooking competition series The Great American Baking Show.
Gomez has asked that spousal support "be determined in mediation," according to the documents.
Hours after announcing the split, Vardalos jetted off to Greece with daughter Ilaria and a friend.
